It'll All Come Out
In The Wash

Avis took her place at the table.
"I'm not goin to school today."
Mom continued frying snips. "Oh,
yes, you are. Now eat your cereal."
"I can't go. It's my birthday!"
"What's that got to do with anything?"
"The girls'll throw me into the
shower. They've been talking about it all week."
Mom laughed. "Nothing wrong with
that, dear. Happens all the time. When I was
your age, too. Just take a change of clothing."
"But Mom, they can't throw me
into the shower!"
"Why not?" Mom's blue eyes twinkled.
"Are you afraid you'll turn into a flig? Or
that your skin'll turn purple? That you'll
grow another head? Surely you're not afraid
you'll dissolve. Don't tell me–"
"Mo-om, I'm serious."
