FIRST PLACE POEM
Let Me Fly Away
By Helen Michiko Singh
North Vancouver, British Columbia
Black black black
Black is the night
Black is my bedroom
Black is hope
Black is sunshine
Black is my father
Black is the beetle upon the wall
Little beetle, little beetle
Where did you come from?
Where will you go?
Let me fly with you
Let me fly away
To a place where there is no black
Where there is no father
No unbidden hands that tear at my nightgown
No fingers that grasp at my tender body
No devil that puffs and groans
Plunging on and on until his lust is satisfied
I cannot cry, there is no one who hears
I cannot run, there is nowhere to go
I cannot tell, I'm so afraid, so afraid
I will not feel the pain
If I leave my body behind
Little beetle, little beetle
Let me fly away with you.
