FIRST PLACE POEM
Winds of Change
By Helen Michiko Singh

North Vancouver, British Columbia

The wind tosses sand into my eyes
As I strain to peer ahead
I take a few hesitant steps forward
Only to get rudely blown back
The sideways shuffle doesn't work, either
There are too many paths to remember
And going backwards only proves that I am a coward
As I stand alone, tense and afraid
The winds of change threaten to tople me
Angina pains sneak across my chest
Knotted muscles screech in agony
Twisting down my neck and shoulders and back
While an ominous tingle cruises down my left arm
High blood pressure wreaking cardio-vascular mayhem
What should I do?
If I choose the unknown, will I come to a dead end?
If I choose too late, will the path disappear?
If I take the way full of potholes
Will a smooth one be waiting around the bend?
What if the road has never been mapped before?
What if I run out of gas and there are no service stations?
What if I find no one to admire the view with me?
Yes, no, maybe, I don't know
I think I'll head into the wind
The indecision is more painful than the journey.
