FIRST PLACE POEM
Nana’s Silver Spoons
By Bonnie Blake

Thunder Bay, Ontario

Nana listened
her wide blue eyes meeting mine.
Every curled white hair
a lesson in patience.
Every winding wrinkle
a map of journeys complete.

She welcomed this
grand-daughter-in-law
with coffee and hot buns
and corduroy footstools.
Her third-floor apartment
like a sturdy log cabin
against the winter wind.

Now, the cold prairie squalls
curve over her grave.
I polish her silverware
in silent swirls.
My hands mimic hers.
The spoon an inverted mirror.
My eyes widen when I glimpse
her blue ones reflected.

SECOND PLACE POEM
The Scent of Spring
By Wendy Chivers

Surrey, British Columbia

Driving across the bridge with the window down
I get an overwhelming scent of spring
The smell of the fresh budding cottonwoods
remind me of a time long forgotten
a time beyond my consciousness
a time of softly flapping sun dried sheets
out on the line
a time of nuzzling my face
into the smooth woven cloth
a time of deeply inhaling
the familiar calming scent of utter freshness
The unfolding resiny cottonwood leaves burst
and release in me a scent of life renewed.
