FIRST PLACE POEM
The Badlands

Surrey, British Columbia

I have seen the badlands of the West
Desolate wastes of barren earth
Denuded of the rich soil of life
Parched and spoarse from the blazing sun.

I have seen valleys where few men dare
Sandy plains where tumbleweed clings to survive
Mountains stretching their snowy tops
Lordly and unyielding to the heat of day.

I have seen deep rivers snaking their way
Twisting and turning as though to escape
The fate of countless dried up lakes
Where naught but mirages grow and fade.

I have seen mirrored on earth's face
Despair of soul seemingly void of all riches
Lonely for the sweet honey of life
Not even the fire of hell to light the way.

And yet I am moved by this strange desolation
With its majestical aura of rugged strength
Hurling its defiant challenge as if to say:
'Take heed! Desecrate not this hallowed land.'
