FIRST PLACE POEM
Reflections
By Sharon Helberg

Surrey, British Columbia

There was a man who gilded me with honey
sticky warm and oozing light.
He polished me with his hands
and with his words
until I shone
and he could see himself in me.

What he saw pleased him greatly.
It made him smile
and I
ever the perfect mirror
smiled back at him.

Painstakingly
the man built a frame
and hung me on the front door
of his house
where passersby could see me
and pause
to admire his craftsmanship.

One day
a rock flew up and chipped the glass.

From that chip spread a hair-line crack
that widened and pulled apart
like the edges of a wound.
Like the shores of a river.

In time
the man packed up his words
folded his hands
and moved away.

This house belongs to me now.
There are lights in every room.
