FIRST PLACE POEM
A Housewife’s Plea
By Mimi Chen

Port Coquitlam, British Columbia

When,
          I ask,
    when
                   may I fly
           freely?
Winging my way to the sun?

Now,
I am grounded,
          wings clipped,
                     watching you
                   a dot in the sky.

FOURTH PLACE POEM
Picture Perfect
By Ms. Buddy Ham

Oliver, British Columbia

Pristine whiteness all around,
Snowflakes melded
to the ground,
Lofty pine trees icing coated,
Craggy hillside mountain goated…
A winter wonderland to view
Picture perfect from God to you.

NINTH PLACE POEM
‘Tickled by Thunder’
Poetry Contest

By William Polsky

Montreal, Quebec

“A poetry contest,” my wife did say.
“By Thunder,” I replied, “I’ll enter today.”
“How hard can it be to write a poem?,
It can’t be harder than writing home.”

“Who’s putting it on?” I asked my love.
“The people you mentioned, four lines above.”
“Whom did you say?” I hadn’t heard,
“For whom am I to write this brilliant word?”

“It’s a contest, so write something funny,
Pretend you’re writing home for money.”
“Tell me for whom, I’m in a big hurry,”
She said, “It’s Larry out there in Surrey.”

“For Larry, I’m to write a poem?,
Why can’t he write it on his own?”
“It’s a contest,” she said, “with a prize,
That will dazzle you by its size.”

“Oh,” I asked, “for what do I strive?”
“Canadian money, I think it’s a five,”
“No sense to bother, is there then?,
’Cause it’s only three cents – American!”
