FIRST PLACE POEM
Dear Editor
By Ellaraine Lockie

Sunnyvale, California

My daughter has a cat
who crams mauled mice
under her covers
Proud gifts he grants
Propelled by primal hunger
and trust in lap pat approval
I’m like that cat
When I lay words
at your feet
Literary allegories
of life midway mangled
Laid bare and bloody
Except I languish
in possible pain
of landing in the alley
Rejected present returned.

SECOND PLACE POEM
The Cat's Alterior
By Mary Rudbeck Stanko
London, Ontario

Peering
through shirtsleeves
in daytime,
sleeping
in a pantleg at night;
this cat
is a lump
in the toe of my
boot –
no garment is too
loose or too
tight.
I think
that it thinks
it is human,
that its fur is not
enough clothes;
why
else would it rest in
the seat of my jeans
or wear
half of my sock
on its nose?
I have given it most
of my wardrobe,
spent
hundreds on sweaters
and coats;
I’m a stark
naked
fool of a female
without pajamas
or purses
or totes.
There’s no
changing the ways
of a feline
who’s drugged on your
intimate attire;
you just wear
a cat collar
and curl up on a rug
and hope
to be warmed by
the fire.
