FIRST PLACE POEM
Unseen Guerrillas
By Kathleen Kemp Haynes

Dorchester, Ontario

gossamer threads across the porch
turned to silver in early sunlight
speak of inhabitants I cannot see
living on the empty chairs.

summer is coming with bees and houseflies.
will the mysterious weavers live
in communion with the others?
or will their survival involve their defenses?
will there be an unseen porch war?
the beauty of the morning belies their plans.

the lushness of summer will signal first strike.
I will not see the threads ensnare
the pollen shifters or the carrion insects,
as I sit serenely on the front lines.

SECOND PLACE POEM
Dinner
By Kathy Ashby
Bracebridge, Ontario

Usually supine is my feline
Limbs languor to the max,
muscles lax.
Kitchen-tin noises trigger
sustenance rules
Ancient instinct survival
suffers no fools.

Pads push in pleasure
with side by slide jig,
Daily, disarming dance,
same insouciant glance.
Beneath whiskers and
ancestral savannah-gold fur
Comes the two-decibel purr
of the masseur.

Served on the dish
to tag-tail fan-fare then
Gobble-no-griping,
lap-lick, wash-and-wiping.
Final pink tongue to me
wet and rough
Not bad, had enough,
couch awaits, swagger off.
