FOURTH PLACE

I Hear Los Angeles Singing

By K. I. M.
Burbank, California

O, the smell of sagebrush in the Springtime!
The popping poppies!
The rattling rattlesnakes!

Yes, hiking high above the smoggy L.A. Basin,
Is where you'll find me,
This coming Springtime.

O, and what a banquet will spread before me!
The urban sprawl!
The roaring freeways!

Yes, hiking high up on the dusty hillsides,
Are where you'll find me,
This coming Springtime.

O, and when I hear that crunching sound!
And see a mountain bike
Bearing down ... !

Yes, then I'll know I'm hiking on a fire road,
Where total rudeness
Is allowed.
