THIRD PLACE
Goodnight Sweet Night
By Judi Meadows
Shingle Springs, California
The last of birdsongs quiets as the stillness of night
sets in
And the singing of crickets begins.
Little by little darkness falls.
One by one, stars make their appearance--
Twinkling lights.
The final pink hued clouds turn to gray.
I breathe in the cooling night air as wisps of hair
blow across my face
And say a prayer of thanks for the days’ blessings.
Wind rushes in and rustles the oak leaves.
The Ponderosa Pine sings
and my wind chimes tinkle.
A night bird calls its mate.
Now, crickets and frogs can be heard
across the darkening landscape
And a few leaves that have lost their grip
Scampering like children along the road.
The August night holds the early chill of fall.
Rubbing my arms I look across the horizon
At the black silhouette of trees,
And say, “Goodnight.”
